The Camp Mercer layout included several athletic fields, reflecting the importance of sports and fitness to the CCC’s mission.

Sports were promoted by the CCC administration as a fun way to foster competitive spirit, build camp comradery, and connect with local communities. Sports reporting in the Mercer Monitor focused on enrollee engagement and entertainment. Sports of all forms and seasons were promoted.

Boxing, one of the preeminent sports in America at the time, was extremely popular at Camp Mercer and throughout the CCC.

Basketball was also popular at Camp Mercer.
